China: Consumer Price Index (CPI) Increased in January 2011

In January 2011, consumer price index rose by 4.9 percent over the same period of the previous year. Of which, urban area and rural area was up by 4.8 percent and 5.2 percent respectively; the price of foodstuff, non-foodstuff, consumable and services expanded 10.3, 2.6, 5.0 and 4.6 percent respectively. Compared with December 2010, CPI increased 1.0 percent. The price of foodstuff climbed 2.8 percent, of which, that of fresh vegetables and eggs increased 14.4 and 2.3 respectively.

The price of foodstuff increased 10.3 percent year-on-year. Of the total, the price of grain, poultry and their products, fresh eggs, aquatic products, fresh vegetables and fresh fruits rose by 15.1, 10.9, 20.2, 11.1, 2.0 and 34.8 percent respectively.

The price of tobacco and alcohol jumped by 1.8 percent over the same period of the previous year. Of which, the price of tobacco and alcohol rose by 0.4 and 4.3 percent respectively.

The price of clothing was down by 0.2 percent year-on-year, of which, the price of clothes climbed 0.3 percent, and that of footware declined 2.8 percent.

The price of household appliances and maintenance services went up by 1.4 percent, year-on-year. Of which, the price of durable consumer goods down by 0.7 percent, and that of household services and maintenance was surging 11.4 percent.

The price of medical care and personal articles increased 3.2 percent year-on-year. Of which, the price of western medicines increased 0.6 percent; that of traditional Chinese medicinal materials and medicines was up by 11.3 percent; and that of medical care services shot up by 0.8 percent.

The price of transportation and communication dropped 0.1 percent year-on-year. Of which, the price of vehicles dropped 1.3 percent; that of vehicles fuel and spares increased 7.0 percent; that of using and maintaining of vehicles rose by 2.3 percent; that of intercity transportation up by 3.7 percent; that of urban transportation increased 0.7 percent; and that of telecommunication tools fell 12.8 percent.

The price of recreational, educational and cultural articles increased 1.0 percent year-on-year. Of which, price of education increased 1.7 percent; that of recreation increased 1.5 percent; that of tourism and outgoing was up by 7.6 percent; and that of consumer durables for recreation dropped 6.2 percent.

The price of articles related to dwelling expanded 6.8 percent over the same period of the previous year. Of which, price of water, electricity and fuel, construction and decoration materials, and housing rent was respectively climbing 3.9, 4.3 and 7.1 percent.
