In August 2011, the total retail sales of consumer goods attained 1470.5 billion yuan, up 17.0 percent, year-on-year. Of the total, the retail sales of consumer goods of industrial enterprises (units) above designated size was 690.2 billion yuan, increased 22.1 percent. From January to August, the total retail sales of consumer goods amounted to 11494.6 billion yuan, up 16.9 percent, year-on-year. Month-on-month increase of the total retail sales of consumer goods in August was 1.36 percent.

In terms of different areas, the retail sales of consumer goods in cities was 1278.3 billion yuan this month, up 17.1 percent, year-on-year; while that in urban areas was 192.2 billion yuan, up 16.4 percent, year-on-year.

In terms of different consumption patterns, the catering services in August gained 171.7 billion yuan, up 16.7 percent, year-on-year; the retail sales of goods achieved 1298.8 billion yuan, up 17.0 percent, year-on-year, of which, the amount of enterprises (units) above designated size was 636.4 billion yuan, up 22.5 percent, year-on-year.
